If you’ve been waiting for a truck that’s ready to take on the outdoors right after driving off the dealership lot, one that’s jam-packed with features and style, and one which comes at a price point that won’t break the bank, then your waiting days are over.
The 2017 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro is a new trim level of the already excellent Toyota Tundra, and the engineers at Toyota Racing Development went through it from front to back, meticulously outfitting it with all the necessary features and technologies to make it an absolute monster both on and off the road. So, expect to see an uptick in used cars in Indianapolis, as people rush to their dealers to trade in their old cars for one of these brand new beasts.
The TRD Pro is a worthy successor to Toyota’s fondly remembered and well-regarded Tundra Rock Warrior. Produced from 2009 to 2013, the disappearance of the Toyota Tundra Rock Warrior left a gaping hole in the hearts of truck enthusiasts everywhere. Toyota is hoping the TRD Pro will patch over that absence, and they are introducing a new, bright star into the market for off-roading and truck fans.
While the Tundra Rock Warrior was certainly an excellent truck in its own right, the TRD Pro has taken what everyone loved about it and improved upon it while still preserving the things that made it so excellent in the first place.
To carry the TRD badging, you know Toyota is going to make sure the vehicle is capable of the highest levels of performance, and such is the case with the Tundra TRD Pro. This truck is designed to take any kind of beating that off-road trails and terrain can throw at it, with dual internal-piston Bilstein shocks with external reservoirs on all four tires, further tuned and customized by the geniuses in-house at TRD.
Because the TRD Pro isn’t overloaded with a lot of unnecessary features specific to off-roading, it remains just as capable in the city, offering a smooth and comfortable ride when you’re just tooling around in town. The 5.7-liter V8 engine puts out a solid 381 horsepower; paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission, it feels fast but never overpowering, and the towing capability is as impressive as any full-size truck, coming in at just under 10,000 lbs.
If you’re a die-hard Toyota truck fan, and you’ve been waiting for their next off-road package truck since they ended the run of the Tundra Rock Warrior, then the TRD Pro is the answer to what you’ve been missing. A worthy ancestor to the Rock Warrior that improves upon its predecessor in all the right ways, the TRD Pro is a fine entry in Toyota’s history of great off-roading vehicles.
